WGU Partners with Nerd Street to Empower Aspiring Esports Players and Military Families

Western Governors University (WGU) has officially partnered with Nerd Street, a move that strengthens the bridge between higher education and the growing world of competitive gaming. The collaboration focuses on supporting both amateur esports players and children from military families, offering them educational opportunities and access to engaging gaming experiences.

A New Era for Esports Education

As part of the partnership, WGU becomes the Official Education Partner of Nerd Street, gaining prominent exposure in broadcasts and marketing for Element, the popular Rainbow Six Siege league operated by Nerd Street and Ubisoft.

What Is Element?

Element is a competitive circuit for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Rainbow Six Siege players in North America. It was created to provide a “path to pro” for those aiming to reach the highest level—Tier 1 esports.

  • The league began in 2023 and is now entering its fifth season in July 2024.
  • 16 teams will compete for a $15,000 prize pool.
  • This season’s matches will feature Siege X, the latest version of Rainbow Six Siege.

Supporting Military Families Through Camp Nerd Street

WGU’s commitment goes beyond esports competitions. The university will fund free registrations for children of active-duty military families to attend Camp Nerd Street in Philadelphia.

About Camp Nerd Street

  • Ages: 8 to 13
  • Duration: One week
  • Focus: A blend of gaming education, strategy development, and physical/social activities
  • Goal: Encourage cognitive skills, teamwork, and responsible gaming in a fun environment

This initiative ensures children from military households can enjoy a safe, engaging space to learn about gaming while developing essential life skills.

Why This Partnership Matters

According to Jeff Harley, Rear Admiral (Ret.) and WGU’s Senior Director of Military Engagement:

“Esports provides a pathway to STEM education and builds critical skills like communication, teamwork, and strategy. Supporting Camp Nerd Street is our way of giving back to the military community.”

Nerd Street’s CEO and founder John Fazio also emphasized:

“WGU’s support is a win for all levels of gamers—from Minecraft-loving kids to serious esports athletes. We believe universities will play a big role in creating career opportunities in gaming.”
